What is an AI voice agent?
It is software on a telephone path that can listen, decide and speak — within rules you set.
A traditional IVR asks callers to press numbers. An AI voice agent keeps the caller on a spoken conversation. Speech is transcribed, a model plus your business rules choose the next step, APIs may run, and a voice reply is generated. If the request is outside policy, the call goes to a person.
The path
Phone or SIP trunk → telephony → voice agent → speech-to-text → language model and business logic → optional CRM/API/database → text-to-speech → caller. Nothing in that chain removes the need for a number, a trunk and a fallback queue.
What it is good at
High-volume, well-defined tasks: hours, FAQs, booking, qualification, status lookups you can source from a system of record. It is not a substitute for regulated advice or for staff who own exceptions.
